I’ve always been drawn to the platypus — strange, elusive, and completely unique to Australia. There’s a quiet magic about them that I wanted to capture here, as it glides downward through still water, both eyes alert. I chose deep green tones to echo the murky bush creeks they call home — layered, mysterious, and full of life. The platypus’ shape gave me room to play with movement and texture in my usual expressive style. This painting holds a calm energy, and for anyone who loves our native wildlife, it’s a grounded reminder of nature’s quiet wonders.

Through the use of mixed media, combining acrylics, spray, enamel and intermittent use of oil paints I let my subject emerge from a rich and deeply layered base. The dimensional texture that masterfully unveils each layer, lets the bright colours play in harmony and contrast with each other.
This artwork is created on 380gsm 100% cotton canvas and finished with a double coat UV resistant, high gloss varnish to protect the integrity and longevity of the painting. Stretched and ready to hang, using gallery-grade hanging wire, this artwork is completed with a custom-crafted floating frame made from Tasmanian oak. I have signed this original painting on the front and back, with its title and date written on the rear of the canvas.
